It’s our professional opinion, with all things considered like foldability, rideability, portability, manoeuvrability, etc, that no one does it better than Brompton - and for 2009 they’ve just got even better. Bromptons are the big favourite with commuters, extremely compact when folded, yet in 15 to 20 seconds transforms into a bike that you’ll be proud to ride, with excellent handling around town, or even a joy to ride on those longer trips, with a choice of single, two, three or the new wide range six speed versions that use the new Brompton/Sturmey BWR hub gear. In addition there are options of 12% reduced gearing for those particularly hilly regions.
Finely-engineered and elegant, the Brompton has a full-sized frame, made mainly of steel for strength and stiffness. It is designed to be practical and light enough to be genuinely portable; actual weight depends on model and configuration, but ranges from 9 -12½ kg (20 - 28lbs). Brompton weights are true weights; unlike most bike manufacturers, they include the weight of mudguards, pedals, etc. in their figures - if it’s on the bike as standard they include the weight.
The combination of a rigid frame and accurate alignment makes for efficient transmission of your energy and a lively, first-rate ride; countless owners use them on long journeys and for touring and a good number even prefer the ride of a Brompton to that of conventional bikes.
The range of Bromptons includes very many possibilities, from three styles of handlebar, lightweight Titanium rear swing arm and forks, Titanium seatposts and folding pedal axles, to the new wide range 6- speed system. This has without doubt broadened the appeal, and younger riders feel more at home with the sport range, and will love even more the new 09 satin colour finishes.
Brompton offer the B-Spoke ordering system for both Steel and Titanium models, which we are more than willing to operate for those that require it. If you would like to order a very specific Brompton that is just to your taste then please make use of the following 3 links, the last of them will take you to our e-commerce site where this option is available. The Brompton Brochure as a pdf. file is always a good start in order to get familiar with the products available. The B-Spoke order form will also help with understanding the many variants on offer. Be-Spoke Bromptons. The downside is the delivery times which are currently around 8 weeks and vary according to the time of year and demand.
We therefore stock a large variety of models with Specifications and colours of our own choice, in order that we can supply bikes for immediate delivery.
We give the full specifications on these web pages .

A key feature of the Brompton is the compactness and practicality of its fold. With a little practice, this is achieved without any difficulty in 10 - 20 seconds. The dimensions of the folded bike are: 585mm high x 545mm long x 270mm wide (22.2" x 21.5" x 10.6").

When folded, a Brompton stays locked together, making it an extremely compact package. The folded package may be picked up without any risk that the bike will unfold, this is one of big plus points on a folding bike that you are likely to rush with onto a train.
There are no projections or loose parts with the folded package and, using the frame or the new saddle as a handle, it carries like a small suitcase, lightweight and easy to manage. The fold is designed to keep vulnerable parts, like cable-runs, out of harm's way and, by folding them in to the centre of the package, to keep the greasy chain and gears away from clothing and luggage. Small rollers allow the bike to be pushed into inaccessible corners. You also have the extra option of Eazy wheels, so the bike can be easily wheeled along when folded.

Just to whet your appetite, here is the wide range of colours available. We do not know where else you can get a choice like this from a leading Bicycle Brand apart from B-spoke frame builders. To top it all, the two standard colours are now Satin Black and Satin Red. this means that at no extra cost even with just two colours you can have 4 different combinations Black Frame with Black extremities (extremities refers to The front fork, handlebar stem, and rear swinging arm) Red/Red Red/Black and the rather attractive Black with Red extremities.
You can choose either to have your Brompton finished in one colour or in two, with the extremities and main frame contrasting. The Raw Lacquer option - seen far left is a clear coating highlighting the braze detail and quality this however is only available for the whole frame, not in combination.
On all Bromptons, steel is used for the main frame and handlebar stem. The steel gives rigidity to the vital link between handlebar and pedals, which is the key to good handling. On a standard Brompton, the extremities are also made of steel, but on a Brompton with a superlight frame, the rear triangle and front forks are made of titanium the finish on these parts is therefore natural titanium , while an alloy headset and titanium seat pillar, mudguard stays, seat pillar and folding pedal-axle save more weight.(In line with the minimalist approach, no pump is fitted on the superlight models). Black or red colours are considered standard, and as such do not attract a surcharge; all other colour options, except Raw Lacquer (which has an £80.00 surcharge including extremities and main frame), have an additional £25.00 surcharge for the extremities and again £25.00 for the main frame.

1 - speed - Light, simple to use and no clutter - for the purist - though the lack of gear range may make this option unsuitable for those riding over hilly terrain and/or looking for more acceleration. + 0.0 g
2 - speed - One gear for hills ans starting from a standstill, and one for cruising. Based on the unique Brompton derailleur system and their special rear free-hub, it is the best setup for lightness and portability. The direct drive, with near perfect chain alignment, is crisp and efficient. All that you need for riding around town, and fine for country rides too, if you don’t mind getting off on the steeper hills. +188g
3 -speed The classic Sturmey-Archer hub, now with an alloy shell, provides three well- spaced gears. These are fully enclosed for reliability, and changing gear couldn’t be simpler. A popular choice for average everyday usage. +818g
6 - speed The combination of the new, highly-efficient Brompton Wide Range hub with their own derailleur system gives six evenly-spaced gears. Control with the two triggers is easy and, with its low transmission losses and wide range, this multi-gear system is the right choice for touring and for riding in hilly areas. +920g

P - type + 375gms The foam lower grips, well forward and about 880 mm from the ground, are angled for comfort on longer stretches of road, and you can deliver some real power to the pedals. Take care, however, as the brakes are on the upper bar, and you should only use thuis low position when the road is quite clear. The upper grips, at about 1033mm, provide a welcome contrast, and also give the best position for manoeuvering in traffic.
The P - type is a bit heavier than the M - type, and there’s less room for over-filling a front pannier, but it’s the best choice for longer distances and touring, or if you intend to do some fast riding.

Weight saving
Whether you choose a minimalist Brompton, or add extra features and weight, it’s always good to keep the bike as light as possible. If you choose the superlight option you will benefit from the weight savings detailed below, you lose almost a kilo, a striking saving when carrying or lifting a Brompton.
The main savings come from the use of high strength Titanium-alloy instead of steel. Though not cheap, titanium is a superb structural material, corrosion free, quite springy, and very lightweight.
Superlight frame option ( - 790gms)
On all Bromptons steel is used for the main-frame and handlebar stem. It’s the steel that gives rigidity to the vital link between handlbar and pedals, the keys to good handling. On a standard frame, the rear triangle and front forks are also steel.
On a superlight frame, these two above mentioned parts are titanium, with the extra springiness of titanium a bonus. Still further weight is saved through having an alloy headset and titanium mudguard stays. Also, as the idea is to minimise what you carry, there is no provision for a pump.

Titanium seat-post ( - 100gms)
The surface treatment on this part gives a deep blue hue, which softens with use. Any of the three Brompton seat pillars is available in Titanium. (for the longer pillars the weight saving is more, - around 225gms
Titanium folding pedal axle (- 25gms )
A small saving, we know, but still worthwhile Also it makes the pedals better balanced.

Other items that you should consider when purchasing a Brompton are shown below.
Saddle height and position
A standard seat pillar should be fine for anyone with an inside leg measurement of 33"/840mm or less.
Extended Pillar (60mm)105g 60mm (over 2 inches) longer than the standard seat pillar and a bit heavier, designed for those with longer legs and available at no extra charge. The main drawback is that the seat pillar protrudes correspondingly higher from the folded package.
Telescopic steel 364g The telescopic seat pillar is designed for those with an inside leg greater than 35"/890mm or for taller riders wishing to minimise how far the seat pillar protrudes from the folded package. The telescopic seat pillar gives up to 175mm (almost 7 inches) more elevation yet, when lowered, the saddle projects only 20mm above the folded package.
Titanium, -75g Identical dimensions to the standard seat pillar (above) but in titanium rather than steel.
Extended (60mm) Titanium 24g Identical dimensions to the extended seat pillar (above) but in titanium rather than steel.
Telescopic Titanium 238g Identical dimensions to the telescopic seat pillar (above) but in titanium rather than steel.

Mudguards and Rack
Version L mudguards.
Essential for most users, giving all the protection you need.
Version R rear rack and mudguards. (+518gms)
Version R provides the additional functionality of a luggage rack over the rear wheel. The die-cast aluminium rack comes with shock cords for tying items on, and a specially-designed Rack Sack is also available for use with it. The rear rack also allows the optional fitting of four Eazy Wheels, enabling the folded bike to be pulled along instead of carried.
Version E , no mudguards 0.0gms
The lightest, cheapest and prettiest version, but with drawbacks. The folded bike stands up OK, but it’s not quite as stable as the other types. There is no pump fitted. There is no protection at all from any water and dirt thrown up.
Hub - dynamo lighting (+276gms)
Expensive, but lovely. The Son hub for small wheels is beautifully engineered and highly efficient, and you can expect years of reliable service. Control is via a switch on the front lamp, the lights are the same as for the tyre-driven system.
Eazy - wheels for any Brompton with a rear rack (+90gms)
Using this set of 4 tyred rollers with industrial bearings you can push the folded bike smoothly around. A rubber bung in the seatpost can be used as a brake to prevent unwanted rolling around

Front carrier system
The Brompton system is a very convenient method for carrying luggage on the bike, and it only takes a single finger press to attach or release it. The load is attached direct to the bike frame, so has little effect on the steering. The system is ideal if you often need to take luggage or shopping with you.
Simply, there is a tapered block and a special frame which latches onto it. We stock a choice of four soft-luggage options which fit over the frame.

All Folding Bikes are thoroughly prepared and checked in the workshop in order to validate the warranties, this involves a thorough setup and adjustment of spokes, bearings, brakes, gears (stops and cable adjustment). The chainset and crank, handlebars and all nuts and bolts are checked for tightness and the pedals fitted. Finally the tyre pressures are set and the folding joints and all quick releases are lubricated and adjusted. After a brief test ride (mainly indoor) they are then carefully packed back into the original boxes using appropriate packaging, this means that the bikes when received and unfolded are ‘ready to ride’ . All 26” wheel Dahon bikes arrive in the UK in boxes with the frame unfolded but the bike partially dismantled. We have taken the decision that in order to properly achieve our highest aim and that of the responsible manufacturers with whom we liase, that we therefore, properly prepare then fold the completed bike with only the handlebar removed, it is therefore necessary for us to repackage the bike accordingly on account of it’s larger size when assembled.
