SUCCINCT G7

SPECIAL WINTER SALE PRICE

We wanted a small range of bikes that started around £250.00 that were reasonably light, with a quick and compact fold, and gearing that at least partly compensated for the 20” wheels.

It’s an unwelcome fact that’s true with so many cheap imports, that even when the riders legs are virtually creating a motion blur, the forward progression is still only 10 -12mph. Needless to say this is not our idea of a sensible folding bike. We would advise anybody considering buying a cheap folding bike to look closely at the gearing. All cheap folding bikes with derailleur gears will use a screw-on freewheel on the rear hub, this means that it will normally have a spread of 6 sprockets with 14 - 28Teeth, bearing in mind that the wheel size will normally be 16” or 20” and as such will have to rotate many more times to achieve a sensible speed, it should be fairly obvious that a largish front chainwheel is essential to achieve this. A minimum size we feel is 52T but even this will only satisfy the  casual leisure cyclist.  There are many imports out there for sale that have much smaller chainwheels of 44 or 46T which is frankly ridiculous for able bodied riders old or young. We stress that we refer to derailleur and not hub gear bikes, and also are well aware and sympathetic towards persons, who through particular disabilities may require such a low top gear.

The gearing we have chosen for the Succinct G7 on account of price is the Shimano 7 speed screw-on freewheel 14 - 28T with a 52T chainwheel. This is recommended only for the more casual rider as cycling at speeds of 10 - 12 mph is the realistic pace with perhaps the odd lively spurt of 15mph.

The next step up from this is when the rear hubs are of the cassette type where the sprocket sizes on a seven speed can be as wide ranging as 11 - 30 Teeth.  This makes a huge difference when used in combination with the 52T front chainwheel, and riding at speeds of 15 - 20 mph or more becomes a reality if you are reasonably fit.  This is the gearing that we really recommend and it’s found by design on our Succinct GD7. (Available online and instore)

It was also essential that the bike was adaptable to most riders of various heights in the UK, and not just for the national average in the country of origin being some 3” shorter than our homeland. Forgive us for saying, that achieving this was quite a tall order.

A further aim with these new introductions to our range was to source bikes that rode and handled significantly better than most, if not all cheap folders, whilst still maintaining a compact folded size.  Crucially, we needed it all at a price that represents sensational value for money.

Designed very much for the more discerning leisure market on account of the specification and price, but possessing similar characteristics to leading folding bike brands, the Succinct range when folded, live up to one dictionary definition of their name -  ‘compressed into a small area’ .

Compromises have to be made when choosing the specification for a more basic folding bike, but we have tried to ensure that it does not impact on the desirability or performance of the bike. Along with the issues discussed above, we insisted on Aluminium V Brakes and Levers, but for example compromised  on the mudguards, which are finished in the same colour as the bike, with chrome steel stays, rather than using high quality black cromoplastic guards with stainless steel fittings

There are significant benefits of purchasing the Succinct GD7 rather than the entry level Succinct G7 detailed on this page, but the upgrades may not be essential for everybody especially if you are an occassional user trying to keep the cost to a minimum.

Important Customer Information

For those of you who prefer a more personal service, we are always very happy to discuss the advantages of the various models to help quide you towards a bike that is suitable for your requirements and within your budget.  We have a passion for folding bikes and their place in todays society for both the commuter and leisure cyclist alike. Please ring us if you need help or advice on 01666 822330

All Folding Bikes are thoroughly prepared and checked in the workshop (unless we state otherwise on Sale models) in order to validate the warranties, this involves a thorough setup and adjustment of spokes, bearings, brakes, gears (stops and cable adjustment). The chainset and crank, handlebars and all nuts and bolts are checked for tightness and the pedals fitted. Finally the tyre pressures are set and the folding joints and all quick releases are lubricated and adjusted. After a brief test ride (mainly indoor) they are then carefully packed back into the original boxes using appropriate packaging, this means that the bikes when received and unfolded are ‘ready to ride’ .  All 26” wheel Dahon bikes arrive in the UK in boxes with the frame unfolded but the bike partially dismantled. We have taken the decision that in order to properly achieve our highest aim and that of the responsible manufacturers with whom we liase, that we therefore, properly prepare then fold the completed bike with only the handlebar removed, it is therefore necessary for us to repackage the bike accordingly on account of it’s larger size when assembled.
